Kate Carbone, PhD

"My passion is to harness the power of the immune system—specifically dendritic cells—to fight cancer. In my lab, we study how dendritic cells orchestrate immune responses within the tumor microenvironment by recruiting and activating other immune players. Using advanced tools like the STAMP model, we study immune cell interactions in vivo, in real time to identify strategies that enhance anti-tumor immunity. Our work is driven by the belief that unlocking the full potential of dendritic cells can lead to more effective immunotherapies that offer real hope to cancer patients."
  • Biography

Dr. Carbone is an Assistant Professor at Seattle Children’s Research Institute and the University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Immunology, and Center for Immunity & Immunotherapies. The Carbone lab investigates how dendritic cells (DCs) regulate immune responses within the tumor microenvironment, with the goal of improving cancer immunotherapy outcomes. Kate earned her PhD from the University of California, San Francisco, where she trained with Dr. Ronald Vale, studying the cell biology of T cell receptor triggering using microscopy-based in vitro systems. She completed her postdoctoral training at Genentech under the mentorship of Dr. Ira Mellman and Dr. Christine Moussion, where she developed novel in vivo microscopy approaches to non-invasively monitor immune cell interactions within tumors.
