Biography
Dr. Ellyson is an early career scholar with a PhD in economics and post-doctoral training in health economics who studies interpersonal violence and alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults with a focus on the role of incentives, decision-making, and policy.
Dr. Ellyson is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and a principal investigator in CHBD whose interdiscplinary research spans health, economic behavior, and law and public policy by collaborating with healthcare practioners, legal practitioners, epidemiologists, and policy makers. She graduated with a BBA in economics summa cum laude from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. She earned an MS and PhD in economics from Florida State University with field area focus in applied microeconomics, econometrics, health economics, and law and public policy. As a graduate student, she was awarded the Irvin & Peggy Sobel Award, for outstanding achievement among students entering PhD candidacy, and she received a Young Researcher Award from the National Science Foundation to attend the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Economic Sciences in 2014 along with approximately 20 U.S. economic PhD students. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in health outcomes, and health economic methodologies under the mentorship of Anirban Basu, Cri Masseria, and Lou Garrison at the Comparative Health Outcomes, Policy, and Economics (CHOICE) Institute at the University of Washington.Â

Dr. Ellyson's research lies at the intersection of health, economic behavior, and law and public policy. She specializes in the use of quasi-experimental and causal inference methods to evaluate the impact of health and other public policies on health outcomes. ​The goal of her research program is to help build and sustain systems and structures that support healing and growth by aligning with the preferences and goals of youth and young adults who experience violence and who use substances.
